Indian Spices for all Diseases – Keep it Handy…


COLDS
Mix a gram of dalchini/cinnamon powder with a teaspoon of honey to cure cold. Prepare a cup of tea to which you should add ginger, clove, bay leaf and black pepper... This should be consumed twice a day.. Reduce the intake as the cold disappears.*

GINGER FOR COLDS
Ginger tea is very good to cure cold. Preparation of tea: cut ginger into small pieces and boil it with water, boil it a few times and then add sugar to sweeten and milk to taste, and drink it hot.

DRY COUGHS
Add a gram of turmeric (haldi) powder to a teaspoon of honey for curing dry cough. Also chew a cardamom for a long time.

BLOCKED NOSE
For blocked nose or to relieve congestion, take a table spoon of crushed carom seeds (ajwain) and tie it in a cloth and inhale it.

SORE THROAT
Add a tea spoon of cumin seeds (jeera) and a few small pieces of dry ginger to a glass of boiling water. Simmer it for a few minutes, and then let it cool. Drink it twice daily. This will cure cold as well as sour throat.

AJWAIN/AJMO FOR ASTHMA*
*Boil ajwain in water and inhale the steam.

CURE FOR BACKACHE
Rub ginger paste on the backache to get relief.

GARLIC FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Have 1-2 pod garlic (lasan) first thing in the morning with water *

HONEY AND GINGER FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Mix 1 table spoon and 1 table spoon ginger (adrak) juice, *1 table spoon of crushed cumin seeds (jeera), and have it twice daily.

MIGRAINE
For the cure of migraine or acute cold in the head; boil a tablespoon of pepper powder, and a pinch of turmeric in a cup of milk, and have it daily for a few couple of days.

BITTER GOURD/KARELA IS GOOD
A tablespoon of amla juice mixed with a cup of fresh bitter gourd (karela) juice and taken daily for 2 months reduces blood sugar.

TURMERIC: CURE FOR INJURIES
For any cut or wound, apply turmeric powder to the injured portion to stop the bleeding. It also works as an antiseptic. You can tie a bandage after applying haldi/turmeric.

CRAMPS
You must do a self-massage using mustard oil every morning. Just take a little oil between your palms and rub it all over your body. Then take a shower. This is especially beneficial during winter. You could also mix a little mustard powder with water to make a paste and apply this on your palms and soles of your feet.

HEADACHES
If you have a regular migraine problem, include five almonds along with hot milk in your daily diet. You could also have a gram of black pepper along with honey or milk, twice or thrice a day. Make an almond paste by rubbing wet almonds against a stone. This can be applied to forehead.

Eat an apple with a little salt on an empty stomach everyday and see its wonderful effects. OR when headache is caused by cold winds, cinnamon works best in curing headache. Make a paste of cinnamon by mixing in water and apply it all over your forehead *

Radish juice should be taken twice a day, once in the morning and then later in the night. Initially drink about ? cup of radish juice and then gradually increase it to ? cup.. VOMITING
Take 2 cardamoms/elachi and roast them on a dry pan (tava). Powder the cardamoms and thereafter add a tsp of honey in it. Consume it frequently. It serves as a fabulous home remedy for vomiting. OR In the mixture of 1 tsp of mint juice and 1 tsp limejuice, add 1 tsp of ginger juice and 1 tsp honey. Drink this mixture to prevent vomiting. *

*OR Limejuice is an effective remedy for vomiting. Take a glass of chilled limejuice and sip slowly. To prevent vomiting, drink ginger tea. OR In 1 glass water, add some honey and drink sip by sip. *

WARTS
Apply castor oil daily over the problematic area. Continue for several months. OR Apply milky juice of fresh and barely-ripe figs a number of times a day. Continue for two weeks. OR Rub cut raw potatoes on the affected area several times daily. Continue for at least two weeks. *

*OR Rub cut onions on the warts to stimulate the circulation of blood. OR Apply milk from the cut end of dandelion over the warts 2-3 times a day. OR Apply oil extracted from the shell of the cashew nut over the warts. OR Apply Papaya juice OR Apply Pineapple juice.*

URINARY TRACT INFECTION
Drink Cranberry juice. You can also add some apple juice for taste.

SINUSITIS

Take a fresh lemon and squeeze it in a glass of water. Add 4 tsp of honey and ? tsp of salt in it. Drink it slowly sip by sip. OR Milk has proved beneficial in treating tonsillitis. In 1 glass of pure boiled milk, add a pinch of turmeric powder and pepper powder. Drink it every night for about 3 days. *

Mention the word ‘freedom’, and every person on earth would wholeheartedly agree that freedom is a necessity. What most of us mean by this is freedom from something or freedom to do something. Children are always looking for opportunities to get free of rules laid down by their parents. Adults want more freedom in their relationships, while older people want freedom from disease, insecurities and loneliness.

True freedom, however, is none of these things. True freedom means the power to be really you. Every one of us is unique, with our own basic personality, wants, desires, likes and dislikes. The sum total of all these makes us what we are. However, few of us are lucky enough to be in control of internal and external circumstances to be able to express our true selves. So we could end up being what we’re not. Family and society, friends and colleagues create circumstances – albeit perhaps with good intentions -- that condition us, often forcing us to do or become what we are not. Invariably, it suits many of us too, to be what others want us to be, rather than to be ourselves.

A child who is well mannered and well behaved gets appreciated and rewarded, while one, who is rebellious, gets scolded and punished. In order to gain approval from others and to get rewarded, children automatically start playing roles which are different from their true selves. In this way, right from childhood, we lose our freedom to be ourselves, and become what others want us to be.

This situation could create plenty of conflicts and turmoil in us. When there is a mismatch between what we truly want to do or say, and what we are forced to, it results in stress. And stress, as is scientifically proven, acts on our body and mind, producing a lot of psychosomatic diseases. As an adult, when we suffer from chronic problems like headache, backache, acidity, hypertension, fatigue or diabetes, we seek medical attention, often not knowing that the root cause of these problems is our lack of freedom to be ourselves and to express ourselves freely. EATING FRUIT...

the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. After digestion, glucose passes into the bloodstream, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach... When we eat, the pancreas automatically produces the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood into our cells. In people with diabetes, however, the pancreas either produces little or no insulin, or the cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced. Glucose builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine and passes out of the body in the urine. Thus, the body loses its main source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose. Diabetes is associated with long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body. The disease often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations and nerve damage. Uncontrolled diabetes may complicate pregnancy. Birth defects are more common in babies born to women with diabetes. In absence of proper utilization of sugar the patient begins to develop various physical ailments like frequent urination, excessive tiredness, loss of weight, blurring of vision, general weakness and skin disorders. Chronic diabetic patients may suffer hypertension, kidney and eye disorders.

There are three types of diabetes:-

Type 1 diabetes: The immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. At present, scientists do not know exactly what causes the bodys immune system to attack the beta cells, but they believe that autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors, possibly viruses, are involved. Type 1 diabetes occurs equally among males and females but is more common in white races of European countries.

Type 2 diabetes: This is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, physical inactivity. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. When type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the pancreas is usually producing enough insulin, but for unknown reasons the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance. After several years, insulin production decreases. The result is glucose builds up in the blood and the body cannot make efficient use of its main source of fuel. Type 2 diabetes is more common in older people, especially in people who are overweight and occurs more often in African and Asian, population.

Gestational diabetes: Some women develop gestational diabetes late in pregnancy. Although this form of diabetes usually disappears after the birth of the baby, women who have had gestational diabetes have a 20 to 50 percent chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years. Maintaining a reasonable body weight and being physically active may help prevent development of type 2 diabetes.

Management of diabetes:
People with diabetes must take responsibility for their day-to-day care. Much of the daily care involves keeping blood glucose levels from going too low or too high. Healthy eating, physical activity and taking insulin are the basic therapies for diabetes. The amount of insulin must be balanced with food intake and daily activities. Blood glucose levels must be closely monitored through frequent blood glucose checking. People with diabetes also monitor blood glucose levels several times a year with a laboratory tests. At least 65% of those with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. Managing diabetes is more than keeping blood glucose levels under control. It is also important to manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Smoking cessation can also help lower risk of stroke.

Yoga, ayurveda and diabetes:
According to ayurveda, diabetes is the result of pitta and kapha imbalances. This is difficult to say whether there is complete cure to diabetes through ayurveda and/or yogabhyasa. Each person is an individual and will be in different stages of the disease. However, whatever the stage of the diabetes, ayurvedic and yoga assist in the healing process. Diet plays an important role. It is very important to be sure to have plenty of bitter taste each day. Your diet should include dark green leafy vegetables, turmeric and fenugreek. In addition to the using fenugreek (sonuf) in cooking, you may also soak one table spoon of fenugreek seeds over night and eat them the next morning. Shilajit, guggulu, turmeric, bitter gourd and the seeds of kalajamoon have curative properties. Research shows that these most commonly available herbs actually assist restoration of the pancreas.

Yoga and management of diabetes:
Yogic system of treatment consists of i) regular practice of certain postures, called asanas, ii) breathing techniques, called pranayama, iii) proper diet management and iv) meditation. Not only for diabetes for any treatment these are the yogic treatment methods. Initially for a period of 3-4 weeks, the patient may not find any improvement through yoga. Thereafter, yoga starts giving permanent and irreversible results. People around 40-50 years find relief by that time. For juvenile diabetics (i.e., below 20-25 years), the results could appear after a year or so.

Yogic treatment restores the normal functioning of pancreas and other glands in the body. When the glands begin to function properly, pancreas gets activated again and results in normalcy of body functions. Following asanas are selected for diabetes treatment. It is not necessary that one should all these but should select whichever suitable to them, depending on time available, age and body ductility. It is imperative that all the asanas (minimum of 5) should be repeated three times. The yogic practice may be done either in the morning or evening in empty stomach. Regular practice is needed. Before starting yoga, one should do some warming up exercises (I need not have to go into this, as these are the same you did in your middle and high schools.Though yoga has its own warming up exercises, to learn along with specific asanas would be burdensome to the learner.

SELECTED YOGASANAS FOR DIABETES

Ardha baddhapadma paschimoottanasana: Stretch both legs in sitting position. Bring one leg near to stomach and press against the abdomen. If possible, you may try to hold the toe using other hand. Now, breath out and bend forward holding (or trying to reach) the out stretched leg. Do not strain but do it slowly and slowly. Achieving the final position is not the goal but attempt is. Hold it until it slightly lessens the pain and come back to original position by releasing the outstretched and and folded leg. Relax for a minute and repeat 2 more times.

Ekapada galavasana: This is one of the balancing asanas. You should not perform this asana if you have weak wrists. First, sit on the floor and bend a leg and using this leg as a support between hands, lean forward. Now, take in the breath and slowly push forward to achieve the final position. Remain in this position for few seconds and come back to sitting position. Take care not to push further more lest you should hit the ground nose.

Shalabhasana: Lay down on the floor, your stomach down. Bring two hands together and clasp. Let thehands be close together and now take in full breath. Putting all the body weight on the wrists, lift both legs - not bending at the knees.

Padahastasana: Stand straight keeping your legs at comfortable distance with each other, say one or two feet. Now, breath out and bend forward keeping both hands on your legs for support. Slowly reach towards the floor, if possible your feet! Keep the knee junction locked. Hold it for some time and come back to standing position. You may not be successful in the first attempt. Try two more times.

Suptaveerasana: This is an easy asana for diabetes. Sit on the floor keeping your both legs to the sides- not too far. Now bend back and come to laying position. Breath slowly and stretch both hands. Automatically, there will be tremendous pressure on your stomach, pulling inside. Repeat two more times. If you are not able to keep the legs side ways, you can keep a pillow and try to sit down on it.

Adomukha matsyasana: Sit on the floor cross legged the bottom portion up (padmasana). If it is not possible, you can squat on the floor (swastikasana) .

Urdhwa prasarita padasana: Stretch hands upwards in laying down position. Take in the breath and lift both legs joined together and hold within your tolerance limit. Now, you feel worms crawling in the stomach. Come back to laying position and breath out. Repeat two more times.

Chatushpadasana: Stand on the ground keeping both legs half to one meter apart. Resting your hands on legs bend forward. Now walk on all fours without bending hands and legs! Your thighs press lower abdomen over and over again. Repeat two more times. Chatushpadasana keeps lower abdomen, bladder and kidneys in order.

Mahamudra:First keep your hands on the knees and inch by inch progress towards toes, but the legs be stretched straight. Repeat two more times. When you get used to retain this position for say one minute, then when you bend forward breath out and pull in the stomach.

Urdhwa dhanurasana: Lay down keeping your hands and legs pulled towards the body, i.e., folded. Now, take in the breath and push the stomach upwards. You need not have to make the legs and hands straight. Push the stomach upwards as far as possible. When you achieve the final posture, breath out. Before coming down to normal positionï take a full breath. You do not loose physical (or mental!) balance, though this posture looks challenging your balance. Problem is to push stomach upwards!

Bhujangasana: Take care to keep the legs together as they try to fly away from each other. It is not necessary to make the hands straight but desirable. Breathing? Repeat two more times.
Pranayama: Do the breathing exercise

Suryanuloma: Breathing slowly through right nostril (pingala) only 10-20 times.

Bhastrika: Fast single time forceful breathing in through right nostril and expelling rapidly 6-8 times through the same nostril. Fast single time forceful breathing in through left nostril and expelling rapidly 6-8 times through same nostril. Finally, same procedure is done with both nostrils for 6-8 times (repeated 3-5 times).

Feasting calls for fasting. It is Diwali celebrations, for Indians around the world. Let it be Thanksgiving, Bakri-id or for that matter any celebration, like a wedding in the family, in any civilization, it always involves over indulgence. We all enjoy feasting, with lots of sweets and deep fried delicacies. Quite a few of us are facing the visible after effects and many more are carrying the invisible menaces. The visible after effects are bloating of belly, acidity and gas. The invisible menace is the toxic residue of oils, grease and sugar. The very next question is whether, there are any counter measures to reduce the side effects? The answer is ‘Yes!’ The answer for feasting is Fasting.

The science behind fasting is simple. Fasting gives our overworked digestive system an opportunity to overhaul or repair itself. It is especially more relevant in our times because of our deteriorating eating habits. In Sanskrit, there is a saying – ‘Langanam parama aushadam.’ Its’ nearest translation is ‘fasting is the best medicine’. Just as poor eating habits cause accumulation of fat deposits and consequent blockage of arteries, resulting in heart diseases, our suppressed emotions form 'energy blocks' disturbing the free flow of energy throughout our body. On the days we fast, the digestive energy (agni) is available to dissolve these energy blocks, burn away the excess fat from our bodies and cleanse our system. That's why we feel light and energetic after a fast.

When we fast, we can do it in a scientific way. It is advisable to select a leisure day. We can select two types of juices and one type of soup. For example, let us select a glass of coconut water with ½ a lime squeezed in to it and fresh orange juice. Take coconut water at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 6pm. Take fresh orange juice at 9am, 1pm and 4pm. Conclude the fasting with homemade warm vegetable soup or warm vegetable broth. This fasting can be done for 1 to 3 days. Drink a lot of water throughout the day. It is also advisable to do some prayers & meditation on the day of fasting. During the fasting, we will be able to feel the cleansing happening in our body. The breath, sweating, urination and bowels will have a strong smell because of the elimination of toxins. Bathing twice or thrice during fasting, facilitates the cleansing. People may experience thick coating of the tongue, bile taste in mouth, slight head ache, but nothing serious. All these are signs that your body is responding to fasting and cleansing is happening. Break the fast on the following day with fruits, bland boiled food.

There are certain conditions. Pregnant women, patients with terminal illness, people under strong medication, kidney failure and people with bleeding ulcers, shall do fasting under an expert doctor’s observation. People for whom cool juices or fruits are not suited, can try warm juices and soup. Fasting is also called ‘Upa-vasa’ in Sanskrit. It means living near to god. Fasting once understood and experienced with an expert naturopath’s advice, is not mere physical experience but a spiritual treat too.
